The son of Hollywood’s actors Jackie Chan has been charged with drug offence and if convicted, singer Jaycee Chan could face up to three years in prison. Chinese prosecutors in Beijing charged Jaycee Chan, for sheltering others to use drugs, more than 4 months after he was detained. In August, the police detained Jaycee at his apartment with Taiwanese movie star Ko Kai along with 100 grams (3.5 ounces) of Marijuana. Police informed that both Jaycee and Ko were tested positive for Marijuana and admitted using the drug. Jaycee Chan’s this act was embarrassing particularly for his more famous father, Jackie Chan. Jackie Chan came forward and apologized over his son’s arrest, saying that he is “heartbroken” and “ashamed”. “Regarding this issue with my son Jaycee, I feel very angry and very shocked,” Jackie Chan said on his microblog. “As a public figure, I’m very ashamed. As a father, I’m heartbroken,” told Jackie Chan.

Why India has to launch satelites from Kourou french guyana even when they have their own launch pads?

Why India has to launch satelites from Kourou french guyana even when they have their own launch pads?

The Guiana Space Centre or, more commonly, Centre spatial guyanais (CSG) is a French and European spaceport near Kourou in French Guiana. Operational since 1968, it is particularly suitable as a location for a spaceport as it fulfills the two major geographical requirements of such a site: it is quite close to the equator, so that the spinning earth can impart some extra velocity to the rockets for free when launched eastward, and it has uninhabited territory (in this case, open sea) to the east, so that lower stages of rockets and debris from launch failures cannot fall on human habitations. Kourou is located approximately 500 kilometres (310 mi) north of the equator, at a latitude of 5°10'. The near-equatorial launch location provides an advantage for launches to low-inclination (or geostationary) Earth orbits compared to launches from spaceports at higher latitude. For example, the eastward boost provided by the Earth's rotation is about 463 m/s (1,035 miles per hour) at the Guiana Space Centre versus about 406 m/s (908 miles per hour) at the United States east coast Cape Canaveral and Kennedy Space Center spaceports which are at 28°27′N latitude in Florida. The proximity to the equator also makes maneuvering satellites for geosynchronous orbits simpler and less costly.

Why a bird does not get electric shock when they sit on electric wire?

Why a bird does not get electric shock when they sit on electric wire?

Usually, when a bird sits on a wire its body touches the wire only and no other thing. Thus no potential difference is created for the current to flow through the bird's body and so the bird doesn't get an electric shock.  Incase the bird would have touched anything else(such as another wire or a nearby wall) at the same time it was sitting on the wire, a potential difference between the two parts of the bird's body (touching two different things)would have been created and it would have got an electric shock. Consider the two terminals of a battery. When we take a wire a connect it to one of the terminals while keeping the other end in the air, no current flows through it.  Now if you connect the two ends of the same wire to opposite ends of the same battery, current will flow through it due to the potential difference between the two ends of the battery.(This can be verified by connecting a bulb to the wire which glows on the account of the current passing through it due to the potential difference).  The same happens in the case of a bird.Usually, when a bird sits on a wire its body touches the wire only and no other thing.

Why snakes are poisonous?

Why snakes are poisonous?

Snake venom is a form of saliva loaded with enzymes. The primary purpose is to assist in digestion, it is also used in defence. Many years ago, it was discovered by vets that if a pet cobra had it's fangs removed, then it would develop a lump near the tail caused by constipation and could die if not treated for constipation. Snakes can precisely control the amount of venom being injected. They give each other love bites, very slowly and with affection, An angry bite can be a snap bite or a very angry chewing bite when the aim is to pump as much venom as possible into the victim. The venom consists of blood poisons and nerve poisons, the predominantly blood poison venoms cause internal bleeding as blood capillaries break down. There are examples of viper bite victims in Africa that have lost flesh from arms or legs as areas of flesh have broken down due to enzyme action.   The difference in snake venom strengths has everything to do with the choice of natural prey, and the likely resistance to venom acting as an aid to digestion before the meal is swallowed. This has been known by snake handlers for a very long time. Scientists could learn from snake handlers. It is a bit strange that we focus so much on how deadly Australian snakes are. They may have highly toxic venom but fatalities are very rare.  World wide deaths from snake bite are hard to accurately determine but estimates range from 20,000 to around 100,000 per year (and probably mostly children working in fields). The majority are in India and SE Asia and typically occur in rice paddies and plantations.  That is a lot of people; more than Rabies, about the same as Cholera and much more than Japanese Encephalitis and snake bite has now been recognised by WHO as a neglected tropical disease.  And yet I have met plenty of English folk and Americans who happily traipse about India and Asia but are fearful of visiting Australia because of all our 'deadly creatures' - weird stuff.

Why are airplanes made out of Aluminum?

Why are airplanes made out of Aluminum?

Strong strength to weight ratio.  While the same can be said of exotic metals like titanium, aluminum is much cheaper. If not for the discovery of aluminum we would not the air travel system that we have today. Early airliners were made of wood until a famous crash where a beloved sports figure and everyone on board were killed. Wood rot was found to be the cause. It drew attention to the problem of using wood for building airplanes. Overnight almost, wooden airplanes were phases out and metal clad airliners like the Ford Tri-motor came into use.  .  Steel or iron is too heavy and other than exotic metals like titanium or non-metal structures like modern day composites were not known at the time. Aluminum is the metal of choice because of it's strength and lightness. Aluminum is not easy to refine from ore but it is the most plentiful metal on Earth.

Why do airplanes have circular windows?

Why do airplanes have circular windows?

The sharp corners on square windows are places where stresses concentrate and multiply their effects, hence the term "stress risers." Cracks, buckles, and tears in the airplane skin tend to start at these points. The rounded corners in airplane windows are much less prone to this problem. Circular shapes are much stronger and resist deforming much better- ie like an egg! Also corners on external features such as windows would create much more drag on the air, meaning less fuel efficiency

Why do crocodiles sit with their mouths open ?

Why do crocodiles sit with their mouths open ?

Crocodiles, like all reptiles, have a skin covered in scales. This skin is designed to hold IN moisture, and to lessen heat loss. They are ectothermic (cold blooded) and therefore derive their body temperature from the surrounding air. As a result, they bring their temperature up by basking in the sun or absorbing it from warmed surfaces like rocks. They do not have sweat glands.  If a Crocodile gets too warm, it can only reduce it's temperature in three ways: get in the shade; get in the water; or sit quietly with its mouth wide open. The body heat therefore is lost through the soft, moist skin of the mouth and tongue. They bask in the sun to heat up, and if they ever overheat they sit with their mouths open to cool down.

Can it really rain frogs and fishes?

Can it really rain frogs and fishes?
Yes! It doesn't happen very often, but there are several known instances where frogs, fishes and others have been sucked up by tornadoes or violent winds associated with thunderstorms, and dropped down out of the sky miles from their ponds. Tornadoes may lift up animals into the air and deposit them miles away. Sometimes the animals survive the fall, suggesting the animals are dropped shortly after extraction. Several witnesses of raining frogs describe the animals as startled, though healthy, and exhibiting relatively normal behavior shortly after the event. In some incidents, however, the animals are frozen to death or even completely encased in ice. There are examples where the product of the rain is not intact animals, but shredded body parts. Some cases occur just after storms having strong winds, especially during tornadoes. Rain of flightless animals and objects has been reported throughout history. Raining animals is a rare meteorological phenomenon in which flightless animals "rain" from the sky. The phenomenon has never been witnessed or scientifically tested.

Why do frogs jump?

Why do frogs jump?
There are lots of animals (like alligators, snakes, owls, and even people) who think that frogs make tasty snacks. Since frogs don't have sharp teeth or claws to defend themselves against predators, the best thing they can do to avoid being eaten is to escape as quickly as possible when they spot a hungry-looking animal approaching them. Sproinnggg!!! Some kinds of frogs can jump distances up to 20 times their own body length in a single leap. When disturbed, frogs often jump into a puddle or pond where they can hide underwater. Their erratic zig-zag jumping on land also serves to confuse potential predators. In most frog species only the males croak. They croak to attract female frogs for breeding, and to warn away other male frogs from their territory. Female frogs think croaking is very sexy. Many kinds of frogs puff themselves up enormously with air when they croak. This amplifies the sounds made by the frog's vocal chords, kind of like how the stretched membrane of a drum works. This is why a little critter like a frog can make such loud noises! They hibernate in burrows or bury themselves in mud. Frogs and toads are cold-blooded and their body processes slow down as the outside temperature drops. (This is why you sometimes find sluggish-acting toads on cool mornings in the spring.) Frogs' bodies have some natural antifreeze built into them, but some kinds of frogs who live in especially cold climates can even survive being frozen solid.

How he makes her girl crazy

How he makes her girl crazy

Every girl loves a little romance. Giving your lady the romantic attention she so craves could do much to endear you to her. Being romantic doesn't have to be complicated or expensive. In fact, some of the most romantic things cost the least amount of money and are really quite simple. Surprise her. Catching your girl off guard is a great way to amp up the romance. Instead of always telling her exactly what to expect on your dates, leave some things up in the air, not allowing her to know specifically what she can expect until the much-anticipated date arrives. Praise her in front of someone else. Give her little love tokens. When a girl gets dressed up it is usually for her guy so tell her she looks great. Give your girl gifts, but make them meaningful. Instead of buying her expensive items that are nice yet not specifically romantic, focus on little presents that are budget-friendly and full of romance. Single roses, hand-written love poems and carefully written cards can all show your girl just how much you love her, and make it clear that you are romantic. Put thought into your dates. Dinner and a movie is great, but doing this every time you head out on a date is sure to get tiresome. Instead of making your dates as predictable – and generic – as can be, take time to plan something special for your girl, showing her that you think she is worthy of going the extra mile. Give her your undivided attention. “If a boyfriend doesn’t give her what she need, she walk away. You obviously can't always be in a private place with your girl, but even when you aren't you can make her feel like you are by giving her your full attention. Avoid looking around at others or getting distracted when out with your girl, showing her that you love her and that she has your full focus. In a healthy relationship, the feelings are mutual. You respect each other and have fun together. If this doesn’t describe your situation, there’s nothing wrong with you, but you probably do need to keep looking. Voice your feelings. Compliment her on her kissing like wow u have nice lips. If you love your girl, tell her. Don't assume that she knows. The more vocal you are about your feelings, the more clearly your girl will understand that you love her. Girls love having sweet nothings whispered in their ears, so don't hold back. Be affectionate. Hugs, pecks on the cheeks and even passionate kisses can do much to show your girl how much you care. Don't hold back on this affection as this physical contact is not only romantic, it also makes it clear to your girl that you are truly in love with her.  Decide ahead of time what your values are and how far you want to go. Pressure is not love, and it’s not even normal. That way, you won’t have to figure it out in the heat of the moment.

Marine shrimp farming

Marine shrimp farming is an aquaculture business for the cultivation of marine shrimp or prawns for human consumption. Commercial shrimp farming began in the 1970s, and production grew steeply, particularly to match the market demands of the United States, Japan and Western Europe. The total global production of farmed shrimp reached more than 1.6 million tonnes in 2003, representing a value of nearly 9 billion U.S. dollars. About 75% of farmed shrimp is produced in Asia, in particular in China and Thailand. The other 25% is produced mainly in Latin America, where Brazil, Ecuador, and Mexico are the largest producers. The largest exporting nation is Thailand.  Shrimp farming has changed from traditional, small-scale businesses in Southeast Asia into a global industry. Technological advances have led to growing shrimp at ever higher densities, and broodstock is shipped worldwide. Virtually all farmed shrimp are of the family Penaeidae, and just two species – Penaeus vannamei (Pacific white shrimp) and Penaeus monodon (giant tiger prawn) – account for roughly 80% of all farmed shrimp. These industrial monocultures are very susceptible to diseases, which have caused several regional wipe-outs of farm shrimp populations. Increasing ecological problems, repeated disease outbreaks, and pressure and criticism from both NGOs and consumer countries led to changes in the industry in the late 1990s and generally stronger regulation by governments. In 1999, a program aimed at developing and promoting more sustainable farming practices was initiated, including governmental bodies, industry representatives, and environmental organizations.

Crazy Bluebirds

The bluebirds are a group of medium-sized, mostly insectivorous or omnivorous birds in the genus Sialia of the thrush family. Bluebirds are one of the few thrush genera in the Americas. They have blue, or blue and rose beige, plumage. Bluebirds may sometimes remain in some northern areas in winter, much to people's surprise. Here's some tips for bluebird enthusiasts, on how to help bluebirds survive in winter.  Bluebirds can roost together in bird houses to keep warm. Insulate your bird houses by closing off all cracks, drainage holes, etc., with some sort of insulating material so less drafts and cold get into the bird house. Just leave the entrance hole open. Face bird houses away from prevailing winter winds. Bluebirds mainly eat fruit and berries in winter. Plant your property with an abundance of crabapples and native, berry-producing shrubs such as viburnums and hollies (like winterberry holly). Place these berry plantings in sunny, protected areas, blocked from winter winds. The bluebirds will have a warm place to eat and use less precious energy. Some bluebirds will come to food such as, hulled sunflower, suet, dried mealworms, and some of the many "bluebird meal mixtures" or nuggets. Generally most bluebirds do not learn to do this. You can certainly try putting out these foods, but your best bet is to have lots of berries planted in your yard. Bluebirds like water (may help with processing the berries) and will visit bird baths and heated bird baths. In general, when it is very severely cold, some people think it is a risk for birds to bathe. Holding off on the water, or placing sticks over the bird bath to only allow birds to drink, not bathe, may be a good idea in this situation. Many birds will eat snow in winter to get water.  Most bluebirds move out of the northernmost areas of their range in winter. Even ones that may linger eventually move on, once their berry sources are depleted or ice-covered. For bluebirds, and many birds, there is a trade-off of staying more north in order to be first to claim prime breeding territories, yet risking survival due to bad weather. Some of these tips may help them survive and you feel you're helping them. Bluebirds are truly beloved.

Enjoy the tourism in Missouri

Enjoy the tourism in Missouri

St Louis Gateway Arch
One of the joys of living in Missouri is its location within a major North American flyway. Missouri (see pronunciations) is a U.S. state located in the Midwestern United States. Missouri is the 21st most extensive and the 18th most populous of the 50 United States. Missouri comprises 114 counties and the independent city of St. Louis. Each spring and fall, large flocks of waterfowl pass through the State, on their way between northern breeding grounds and wintering sites within Missouri or to our south.  Among those travelers are snow geese, a species that never fails to stir my soul.  Moving south in autumn, snow geese congregate at staging areas across the Heartland and tend to travel in massive flocks; in spring, they return to their Arctic breeding range in smaller, more widely scattered groups.  As a result, these vocal migrants are more often encountered in spring (generally from late February through mid March) than they are during the fall (usually mid November through mid December).  As we approach the winter solstice, we have yet to enjoy the sight and sound of migrating snow geese this autumn.  Though I have looked for them on and above the farmlands of central Missouri, listened for them in the night and traveled to regional wildlife preserves in an effort to find them, this is the first autumn since we moved to Columbia (in 1997) that my vigil has failed.  The snows have likely traveled east and west of central Missouri this fall; perhaps some passed through during my time in Colorado.  Whatever the reason for our lack of success, a snowless autumn was certainly a disappointment; then again, late February is but two months away! Missouri's geography is highly varied. The northern part of the state lies in dissected till plains, while the southern part lies in the Ozark Mountains (a dissected plateau), with the Missouri River dividing the two. The state lies at the intersection of the three greatest rivers of North America, with the confluence of the Mississippi and Missouri Rivers near St. Louis, and the confluence of the Ohio River with the Mississippi north of the Bootheel. The starting points for the Pony Express, Santa Fe Trail, and Oregon Trail were all located in Missouri. The mean center of the United States population at the 2010 census was at the town of Plato in Texas County.

How to plan awesome picnic trip

How to plan awesome picnic trip

Picnics are often family-oriented but can also be an intimate occasion between two people or a large get-together such as company picnics and church picnics. Nearby parks, rooftops, beaches or farm house etc. are ideal choices. On romantic and family picnics, a picnic basket and a blanket (to sit or recline on) are usually brought along. Outdoor games or some other form of entertainment are common at large picnics. Make sure the invitations have your name, the location of the picnic, and the time in which your picnic will take place. Add any additional information to your invitation such as whether your guests are free to bring food, carpooling opportunities, etc. Make a guest list so as to get a general feel of how big your picnic will be. Classic picnic foods are sandwiches, fruits, salads, chips, cookies, hot dogs, pies, vegetables, fruit punch, lemonade, soda, and bottled water. Finger foods are the most comfortable to eat and serve. Remember you can be creative and make your picnic memorable. Try exotic foods such as tapas (bread and dips), olives and cheeses. Pack a picnic blanket, paper or plastic cups and plates, forks, knives and spoons, trash bags, and anything else you will need. Paper napkins are a must. You may have portable folding picnic chairs and tables. Wear something comfortable and if it is hot out wear loose, light clothing, wear insect repellant and sunblock if needed. Take care of security in public areas and insecured alone places. Don't forget your camera, mobile phones games and gossips! Planning a picnic is just like planning a small, transportable party, and if you think of it that way, it will help you with the organizing. Thinking through the who, what, when, where, why and how will keep you from missing any details. Essentially, the ideal picnic is nothing more than choosing a great location, inviting a good group of people, bringing something to sit on, and packing some delicious food and drinks. When deciding on the location, be sure to consider the on-site amenities.

How to plan romantic memorable honeymoon

How to plan romantic memorable honeymoon

New places and romance go together like a good meal and good wine. Because your lovely new bride was gracious enough to spend the last year planning essential wedding stuff like dessert garnishes and the color of your napkin rings, it's now your turn to plan the honeymoon. New places are renowned for its gastronomy, history, culture and fashion. Her expectations are probably a little higher than your college roommates. There are numerous well-known tourist attractions including Côte d'Azur (the French Riviera), the Atlantic beaches, the winter sport resorts of the Alps, the Castles of Loire Valley, Brittany and Normandy (Mont Saint Michel), the small villages in wine country and of course the romantic city of Paris. Don't splurge on first class for domestic flights. Honeymooners have seemingly endless options in France. France is a cultural center led by its art, food, wine and timeless style. Newlyweds could spend their entire trip in a city like Paris with its museums and attractions, but France offers many opportunities. Don't invite your parents. Your experience can range from sipping coffee in an open-air cafe to sipping wine on a river barge. Don't wait until the last minute to get your passport. You can even visit Disneyland and order a beer with your Big Mac. Because France is centrally located in Europe, it makes surrounding countries very easy to access.  France is about the size of California. The English Channel lies to the north-west and the Atlantic Ocean to the west. Don't plan to do too much during your trip. Spain is across the Pyrenees to the south. The Mediterranean Seas to the south-east and Switzerland and Italy are over the Alps to the east. France's north-eastern border is shared with Germany, Luxembourg and Belgium. The French Alps include Mont Blanc, named after the pen, which at 4800m (15,750ft) is Europe's highest peak. The Mediterranean beaches tend to be pebbly and rocky, but there is some sand. France has a lot to offer with its geography and climate; this gives you a lot of outdoor options. Couples from South Korea ventures the farthest, traveling more than 4,000 miles from home, while Americans' median distance was just over 500 miles. When booking a honeymoon, couples are looking for somewhere that offers the luxury of seclusion in a beautiful, romantic setting. Hiking, mountain biking and cycling are popular activities in France which is famous for the road race, the Tour de France. Some places are always harder to reach from where you live and require a commitment to spend additional time traveling to get there. Skiing is also popular with some of Europe's best and most expensive resorts in the Alps, with cheaper options in the Pyrenees. Other activities include enjoying the water in the Atlantic coast, the Channel coast of Normandy, the Mediterranean, as well as in Lake Geneva. The list just keeps on going with rock climbing, horseback riding, surfing, rafting, and hang-gliding. If you'd rather just sit around, you can impress your hosts by learning the French language or your spouse by learning the French cuisine. France is best in spring. Remember the movie, "April in Paris." Actually, the weather isn't bad throughout the year with a temperate climate, including mild winters. Paris' average annual temperature is 52ºF (12ºC), but it can drop below zero in January and can climb to 95ºF (35ºC) in August. You'll want your honeymoon to be remembered for years to come. Planning your honeymoon can make all the difference in how it turns out. The southern coastal plains are subject to a pleasant Mediterranean climate: spring and autumn downpours are sudden but brief and summer is virtually without rain. Take the time to discuss with your future spouse what the two of you would like. Plan something that fits your budget and that you both can agree on. Compromise, because this is a trip about both of you. If you don't have the money to afford a honeymoon, honeymoon at your new home and plan your "real" honeymoon at a later date and time.

The Interview is on release now

The Interview is on release now
24 December, 2014, WASHINGTONUSA NEWS CORP

Sony Pictures said it would show The Interview in some US theatres.  The White House praised Sony's about-face, which the studio said would result in "a limited theatrical release" on Christmas Day of the film, which stars Seth Rogen and James Franco and is about a fictional plot to assassinate North Korea leader Kim Jong Un.  "The decision made by Sony and participating theatres allows people to make their own choices about the film, and we welcome that outcome," presidential spokesman Eric Schultz said.  Obama had called Sony's decision to pull the movie a mistake, suggesting it could set a precedent in which "some dictator some place can start imposing censorship here in the United States." George Clooney, had also assailed the cancelled release, with some accusing the studio of self-censorship. Sony Pictures Entertainment chief executive Michael Lynton said the studio was looking for more options to screen the film, which major US theatre chains pulled because of threats from hackers who warned of a Sept 11, 2001 style of attack.  Lynton said: "We have never given up on releasing The Interview and we're excited our movie will be in a number of theatres on Christmas Day." He said Sony was trying to secure other platforms and more theatres "so that this movie reaches the largest possible audience."  It is notable that The Journal of Journalism & Mass Communication and Prestigious business management journal (International Journal of Business Management) already reported that it is a move to boost the movie. The journals reported on 14 December, 2014 that 'The Interview' has attained enough publicity like Harry Potter worldwide, and it is much ready now to make big international business. It remained unclear how many theatres would be allowed to screen the film and if major movie chains would reverse course and join the group of authorised exhibitors. North Korea experienced Internet problems at the weekend and a complete outage of nearly nine hours before links were largely restored on Tuesday; US officials said Washington was not involved in this.  Jim Cowie, chief scientist at Dyn Research, linked it with power problems inside North Korea.

The Interview: The truth you will never know
14 December, 2014, United KingdomUSA NEWS CORP

Kim Jong UnnSony is facing criticism from pundits, celebrities, and even President Obama, over their decision to pull “The Interview” from theaters amid threats from North Korean-backed hackers, ahead of its scheduled Christmas Day release. The comedy film, which stars James Franco and Seth Rogen, depicts the assassination of North Korean dictator Kim Jung Un. Obama including his celebrity friend and regular donor George Clooney, said they thought Sony made a “mistake” by yanking the movie. “We cannot have a society in which some dictator some place can start imposing censorship here in the United States,” Obama said. “Because if somebody is able to intimidate folks out of releasing a satirical movie, imagine what they start doing when they start seeing a documentary they don’t like or news reports they don’t like. The president said that he wished Sony had run their decision by him first. The Journal of Journalism & Mass Communication told that 'The Interview' has attained enough publicity like Harry Potter worldwide, and it is much ready now to make big international business. Prestigious business management journal (International Journal of Business Management) here said that ultimately Sony has gained wide publicity through it's controversy. The U.S. could finally force North Korea to talk with it, indirectly. Here political diplomacy pushes North Korea to say that The U.S. should bear in mind that it will face serious consequences in case it rejects our proposal for joint investigation and presses for what it called countermeasure while finding fault with the North Korea. North Korea could earn a negative image among FDIs for business incubation. The U.S. could spread rumors successfully if it is really wrong, as North Korea has expressed. If really hackers are behind it, they could successfully turn the wave to Norh Korea's prestige.

Mauritania, nuclear medicine centre, radiotherapy, cancer, IAEA

The opening of Mauritania’s first ever nuclear medicine centre with IAEA support last month will lead to improved access to modern diagnostics and treatment, as well as lower costs. The new facility is part of the country’s National Oncology Centre, which opened in 2010. The centres offer comprehensive services in diagnosing, treating and managing cancer and other diseases in Mauritania and the surrounding region.  “We are very enthusiastic about this relationship [with the IAEA], which has begun to deliver very positive results in a very short time,” said Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz, President of Mauritania, at the inauguration of the new facility. “In terms of medical treatment of cancer, we are now in a fairly comfortable position in the sub-region.”  Nuclear medicine and radiotherapy are two key areas of medicine that use radiation and atoms that emit radiation, known as radionuclides, to diagnose, treat and manage diseases.  For an audio feature on the opening of the nuclear medicine centre, including an interview with President Abdel Aziz, listen to our IAEA Talk podcast: La transformation du traitement du cancer en Mauritanie.  Facing cancer head-on  Cancer is increasingly recognized as a major public health problem across Africa. The burden of the disease has worsened as rising living standards have led to lifestyle and environmental changes that increase the incidence of cancer, such as unhealthy diets, pollution and physical inactivity.  For many years, Mauritania, one of Africa’s 34 least developed countries, has struggled to address the financial and human costs related to cancer. Haematological malignancies and solid tumours, for example, require specialized treatments that were not available at Mauritanian hospitals, requiring patients to seek treatment abroad. Cancer of the cervix, breast, prostate, liver and ovary are among the most common in the country.  Today, Mauritania offers patients options for care closer to home. The two centres provide radiotherapy and nuclear medicine services using a linear particle accelerator and a high-dose brachytherapy machine. They also employ more than 20 medical professionals trained through IAEA fellowships, training courses and expert visits.  “There were huge challenges ahead of us. We had no infrastructure, no equipment and no human resources to treat our patients,” said Moustapha Mounah, Director of the National Oncology Centre. “Now, after four years, Mauritania is able to conduct radiotherapy and nuclear medicine, with very sophisticated materials, and operated by Mauritanians.”  Supporting transformation through cooperation  The IAEA has supported Mauritania since 2001 through its technical cooperation programme, assisting the government to transform the country into a nation able to safely and cost-effectively use nuclear techniques. The country now uses nuclear technologies and tools to fight pests and animal disease, map water tables underground, as well as monitor and measure radiation dose levels to protect health care professionals, the public and the environment from ionizing radiation. It is also training engineers and economists to use energy planning tools and databases related to nuclear energy.  Although Mauritania still has plenty to do, the country has made great strides in a few short years, giving patients access to better care closer to home that will undoubtedly impact the fight against cancer, President Abdel Aziz said. “We believe that in the future this important relationship for our country, and a model in the sub-region, will continue to evolve. Given these developments, we are very confident that things will continue to improve,” he said.
