Rohtak Sisters and Blackmailing?

USA NEWS CORP

15 December, 2014, India, USA NEWS CORP

The story has turned to a new rout now. Now it is colored with castism (upper and lower cast). It seems issue is being painted now for politics. Since the evolution of issue from Bus ride, Rohtak, Haryana, India, it is taking turns weeks by weeks. Earlier the issue was dispute over seat number allocation. Later it turned towards molestation. Now it turns towards castism. As new videos are emerging day by day, the authenticity of girl's claim in under suspense. Some eyewitness and video concludes that whole picture is drafted, and once it was a success, it is being used for molestation. Had another video in which these two girls are beating a boy in a park not aired, it would become hard to know the other side of story. In both videos aired yet, only these girls are beating rudely. Molestation could not be seen in these videos. It is never told that who shoots these videos and why. It leads the speculations towards blackmailing. Earlier while these girls were interviewed by Zee TV, these girls found it better to quit the interview, while they were uncomfortable to answer the raised question. Harish Ahlawat, who is seen sitting next to his wife Usha in a video, tells journalist Deepa Bhardwaj, “About a month ago I had gone to Tiliyar Lake along with my wife and children. When I heard some noise, I saw two girls badly thrashing a boy and another boy capturing the video. At this point he tried to intervene and stop the fight while asking the girls the reason behind that fracas.    “But the girls pounced on me, held me by my neck, and started using expletives while asking in a threatening vein, 'who the hell are you to intervene?'"   The girls also threatened Harish claiming that their uncle was a cop and that she would file a case of molestation against him and get him behind bars. In another incident Sumit’s father Ramphool tells, “Around six months ago the same sisters had made an allegation of molestation against my son, even though he was not even present in the bus at the time the alleged incident took place. The case was probed by the Rohtak police. Being a respected family in the village, we were severely hurt because of this, to the extent that we made him quit the college. We had to pay Rs. 20,000 to the sisters to get rid of them. The whole matter is under Police investigation. The expressions on their face in videos show they are picking up innocent people and hitting them. It seems these two girls are putting on a pre-planed show with their own camera team. The issue also questions the national media's role which without evidence in video, alleged the boys. These girls must be investigated for any agenda and may have some people / NGO behind this. May be boys are guilty but without proper investigation how to be so judgement. Government should ensure that innocent people could survive with peace and justice. There is urgent need to amend the law in this direction to stop blackmailing business in such cases. Earlier in Uber case, law needed to be changed, but since it's a long procedure, Government banned Uber, which does not ensure women safety. Rakhi Sawant's friend slaps director, accuses him of casting couch. This case is also under police investigation. It is also worthy to note that Haryana govt puts on hold bravery award for Rohtak sisters. Passengers on the bus say the confrontation was over seats, not abuse.

Obama Stresses to Funding Against Ebola

Obama Stresses to Funding Against Ebola

14 December, 2014, U.S., USA NEWS CORP

Nature reported that NASA and the US National Science Foundation would see their budgets rise in fiscal year 2015 under a US$1.1 trillion spending bill approved by the US Congress. The measure, passed by the House on 11 December and by the Senate on 13 December, also includes an additional $5.2 billion in aid and research funds for the Ebola epidemic in West Africa. US President Barack Obama is expected to sign the bill into law, finalizing the budget for US agencies through 30 September 2015.  President Obama praised researchers for their progress in developing a potential vaccine for Ebola and called on Congress to pass $6.2 billion in emergency funds to fight the virus, warning, “We cannot beat Ebola without more funding.” Overall, the bill would increase spending on research and development by 1.7% above the 2014 level — in lockstep with the rate of inflation. But the share of money going to basic research would decline by 0.3% in real dollars, according to Matt Hourihan, director of the research and development budget and policy programme at the American Association for the Advancement of Science in Washington DC. “The problem is it continues the slow bleed,” says Michael Lubell, the director of public affairs for the American Physical Society in Washington DC. The Ebola bolus includes $25 million for the Food and Drug Administration for purposes such as expediting drug and vaccine approval. The Department of State, which includes the Agency for International Development, would receive an additional $2.5 billion for Ebola programmes. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention would get $1.78 billion for its Ebola work in the United States and Africa, and the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease (NIAID) would receive $238 million for research that includes testing experimental Ebola vaccines. AAAS reported that Congress will soon return from the August recess and resume consideration of FY 2015 appropriations. As usual at this time of year, there's still quite a bit of work to do to complete the process, especially in the Senate, and limited time before the elections to do it. Senate Appropriations Chair Barbara Mikulski (D-MD) remains interested in a September omnibus that would package all or several bills into one, but the odds seem to favor a continuing resolution to avoid a shutdown and extend current funding through the election, as House Republicans prefer.  With all this uncertainty, it's hard to say when appropriations will be finalized, and which recommendations from appropriators will survive any eventual negotiations and work their way into law. And there are still no NIH figures available in the House. But outside of NIH, enough progress has been made to provide a general picture of Congressional preferences for R&D funding in FY 2015. A rundown of the big picture is below, followed by brief agency recaps. National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases reported that an experimental vaccine it developed, along with the pharmaceutical giant GlaxoSmithKline, had produced good results in tests with 20 healthy adults, who developed antibodies against Ebola.

Why bird flocks move in unison

Why bird flocks move in unison
14 December, 2014, United KingdomUSA NEWS CORP

The reasons behind impressive formations of flocking birds, or schools of fish swimming in unison, will be discussed at the University of Lincoln’s Mathematics Christmas Lecture this month.  The talk will examine how and why such occurrences – which can also include the movements of human crowds and groups of bacteria – take place. Researchers in the field say that this so-called active matter form movements which make them appear to be a single organism, and is at the forefront of modern interdisciplinary research.  The lecture, 'Amazing flocking of birds: is it biology or mathematics?', will take place on Wednesday 17th December 2014 at 3 pm in the Engineering Hub (ENG208) on the University’s main Brayford Campus. It will be delivered by Professor Andrei Zvelindovsky, the Founding Head of the School of Mathematics and Physics at the University of Lincoln.  He said: "We all wonder why starlings flock in the sky: is it some mysterious collective intelligence of birds, which creates wonderfully complex patterns, or is it something really simple, like mathematical rules? This lecture will seek to explain how mathematics can help to decode some of these fairly complicated behaviours.” In Cologne, Germany, two biologists from the University of Leeds demonstrated a flock-like behavior in humans. The group of people exhibited a very similar behavioral pattern to that of a flock, where if 5% of the flock would change direction the others would follow suit. When one person was designated as a predator and everyone else was to avoid him, the flock behaved very much like a school of fish.  Flocking has also been considered as a means of controlling the behavior of Unmanned Air Vehicles (UAVs).  As per Journal of Psychiatry Flocking is very common among species and it happens due to a reason e.g. defending from predator. Flocking is a common technology in screensavers, and has found its use in animation. Flocking has been used in many films to generate crowds which move more realistically. Tim Burton's Batman Returns (1992) featured flocking bats, and Disney's The Lion King (1994) included a wildebeest stampede.  Flocking behaviour has been used for other interesting applications. It has been applied to automatically program Internet multi-channel radio stations. It has also been used for visualizing information and for optimization tasks.

The Vanya Salvini researcher in Santigo, Chile, presented the work Better Designing and Evaluation of Insulating Ceramics Foamed, developed in the Department of Materials Engineering School of Engineering of São Carlos, USP (EESC) of USP. The highlight was offered by the Latin American Association of Refractory Products Manufacturers, the contribution to the processing and evaluation of ceramic foams for thermal insulation properties at high temperatures, ALAFAR Award 2014. The research involves the development of the manufacturing process and analysis of mechanical behavior of ceramic foams which are lightweight materials, homogeneous high porosity, high strength and low thermal conductivity, which in this design are produced using technologies and green additive free toxicity. There are several applications for these materials, such as thermal insulation for industrial furnaces, porous supports for drug delivery, porous biomaterials for bone regeneration, sound insulation for construction, among others. Being a versatile material, its chemical composition and porosity can be molded according to the intended end application. In bone regeneration, for example, ceramic foam must provide interconnecting pores and is biocompatible. As for heat insulation, the material must be resistant to cyclic thermal shock, and preferably consists of a structure of closed microporosity. M. Bouzid, A. Djadi, C. Aribi, A. Irekti, B. Bezzazi, and F. Halouene received Photon Excellence Award-2014 in Materials Science by Photon Foundation. The nature of materials structuring our health institutions promote the development of germs. The sustainability of nosocomial infections remains significant (12% and 15%). One of the major factors being the portland cement which is brittle and porous. As part of a national plan to fight nosocomial infections, led by the University Hospital of Blida, They opted for a composite coating, application by multilayer model, composed of epoxy-polyester resin as a binder and calcium carbonate as mineral fillers. The application of composite materials reinforce the wall coating of hospital units and eliminates the hospital infectious areas. The resistance to impact, chemicals, raising temperature and to a biologically active environment, gives satisfactory results. The research was performed by  Research Unit: Materials, Processes and Environment, University M'Hamed Bougara, Frantz Fanon City, Boumerdes Algeria, Department of Research and Development, Health Technology of Algeria, Tipaza, and Departement of Biology, Faculty of science, University M'Hamed Bougara, Frantz Fanon City, Boumerdes Algeria.

Radioactive contamination need proper environmental monitoring

14 December, 2014, Japan, USA NEWS CORP

Radioactive contamination of the soil in the Fukushima area as a result of the Fukushima nuclear disaster is one of the most serious problems in Japan but it was still uncertain what kinds of materials actually bind the radioactive cesium nuclides which are responsible for the radiation. Due to such uncertainty, research and development of effective actions for decontamination have not progressed.

Associate Professor Kogure’s laboratory in the Graduate School of Science, the University of Tokyo and researchers in Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA), National Institute for Materials Science (NIMS), and the Japan International Research Center for Agricultural Sciences (JIRCAS) have successfully identified the cesium-fixing fine particles in soil samples from Iitate, Fukushima, and determined the distribution of the radiation in these particles, mainly using a variety of electron microscopic techniques. Alshamy A.A., Diab H.M., ElKameesy S.U., and Samy R.M., operated Elemental and Radiological safety Assessment in Al-Ramsy mining and milling facility Southwestern Sinai, Egypt. The research was carried by  Radiation Protection Department, Nuclear and Radiological Regulatory Authoriy, Egypt, Nuclear Material Authoriy, Egypt and Faculty of Science- Ain Shams University, Egypt. The obtained results showed that all locations at distances > 200 m inside the mine are expected to be hazardous. The results were published on The Journal of Energy and Environmental Science. Dose assessment and hazard indices criteria were calculated and discussed. It was found that the absorbed dose rate, annual effective dose, internal annual effective dose due to radon progeny and the representative level index Iγr  exceed the regular limits in particular at sampling locations 10, 11, 12 and/or at distances (x >200m) inside the mine. Accordingly, results may be used to collaborate in the development of the mine by taking into consideration all the possible solutions such as ventilation constructing several opening in the wall of the mine and using suitable machinery systems inside the mine to explore the fore mentioned strategic elements inside the mine. Um Bogma formation in southwestern Sinai is the site of important elements exploration since more than four decades. The main strategic elements considered in this place are U, Mn, Fe and Cu. The beneficial uses of these elements are very well known in different industrial domains. As a matter of fact majority of different ores in mines contain considerable amount of natural radioactivity. The major sources responsible for that are the naturally occurring radionuclides in the earth’s crust such as 238U, 232Th and 40K. Investigations on terrestrial natural radioactivity in soil, host rocks and mines have received considerable importance worldwide and led to extensive work in many countries.
