Presently he is an Assistant Professor of Botany, Dr. B. R. Ambedkar University, Agra. He published more than 30 research papers in the field of Plant Physiology and Plant Biotechnology in different national and international journals of repute. He was also awarded with Young Scientist by Govt. of India.

Vikas Bhagat, Showkat A. Ganie, Gunjan Dhakarey, Rajneesh K. Agnihotri and Rajendra Sharma from India made a historical victory over the international competition and won Hermann von Fehling Research Award-2015 in Phytochemistry. Their research was highlighted in international media and gathered a large worldwide attention in scientific circles while it appeared in world's most read journal 'The Journal of Ethnobiology and Traditional Medicine'. In their report on Phytochemical Analysis and Antibacterial Efficacy of Morus alba L. they mention that Objective: To explore the in vitro antibacterial potential of Morus alba against human pathogenic bacteria and qualitative phytochemical analysis to determine the nature of phytoconstituents responsible for the bioactivity. Methods: Aqueous and methanolic leaf extracts of Morus alba were screened for phytochemical analysis and in vitro antibacterial activity against Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Klebsiella pneumonia. The activity was analyzed by disc diffusion method using cefotaxime as positive control. Results: Both aqueous and methanolic leaf extracts efficiently repressed the growth of the test pathogens. Methanolic leaf extract showed better activity than aqueous against both the test organisms. Dose dependent antibacterial activity was observed in both the extracts. The phytochemical screening revealed the presence of tannins, steroids, flavonoids and phenolic compounds, which might have a functional role in antibacterial activity. Conclusions: Based on the finding it could be inferred that M. alba would be a reliable source for the treatment of some common diseases caused by resistant pathogens. However, work should be done on the toxicity of crude extracts and isolated compounds from the plant species, to ensure their eligibility for the source of indigenous medicine in future. Under their leadership the research area is surely likely to expand beyond the horizons. It will be worthy to explore the further potential under their legacy. Vikas Bhagat, Showkat A. Ganie, Gunjan Dhakarey, Rajneesh K. Agnihotri and Rajendra Sharma as valuable intellectuals for the India offer exclusive opportunities for scholars around the world. One of the most attractive weightage for India is to have the awardees for promotion of the concerned scientific discipline for the benefit of its civilians. Thus India which has excellent track record to produce brain storming intellectuals, has offered a new extension in terms of Vikas Bhagat, Showkat A. Ganie, Gunjan Dhakarey, Rajneesh K. Agnihotri and Rajendra Sharma to world.

Based on these results, it may be concluded that the active phytocompounds present in Morus alba should certainly find place in treatment of various bacterial infections. The results of this study are very encouraging and indicate that it should be studied more extensively to explore its full phytochemical profile. The use of plant extracts with known anti-microbial properties can be of great significance in modern therapy. However, further study on chemical constituents and their mechanisms in exhibiting certain biological activities are needed to understand the complex pharmacological effects of plant species.

The current study reveals that the leaf extracts of M. alba exhibit a strong antibacterial activity in a dose dependent manner. Methanol was the better extractive solvent. K. pneumonia was relatively more sensitive to the methanolic leaf extract.

In this study, antibacterial activity was determined, however, the chemical constituents that might be responsible for the activity was not identified and characterised.

Further studies should focus on phytochemistry to elucidate the chemical nature of the plant species. Besides, mode of action of the extracts on the microbes should be investigated.

ABC News Reports Crossbench still against higher education bills despite backdown

A Federal Government move to sideline a $1.9 billion budget cut to higher education courses and push ahead with fee deregulation has failed to sway the Senate crossbench. The measures — fee deregulation and the funding cut — were at the heart of the Coalition's university overhaul, which seemed doomed to fail for a second time in the Senate and have now been split into two separate pieces of legislation. The original bill faced heavy opposition, with only one crossbench senator out of eight publicly prepared to back it — far short of the six votes required. But hiving off the budget cut to a separate vote has not won over the vote — with at least five crossbench senators telling the ABC they will not vote for the core deregulation legislation.

"I think it's the right time for me and the Australian team," he told reporters on Saturday. "I don't think it's reasonable to expect I'll be fit and available for the next World Cup, so I think it's the right time." He said he hopes stepping back from the shorter form of the game will prolong his Test career.
