The Martian is a story of an astronaut Mark Watney (Matt Damon) who is in a team of astronauts who are on a manned mission to Mars. A storm breaks out on Mars, everyone comes back to the ship except Mark. His teammates thought he died & hence they took off. Mark survives & makes Mars habitable for a certain amount time with his skills. NASA realizes about Mark’s survival & they plan a rescue mission with the help of CNSA. Then comes various twists & turns in the mission & you should go check out the film in the theatre.
Hollywood comes up with space movies every once in a while & usually they are all good. There may be certain scientific miscalculations but story wise, they are fun. The Martian is one of those movies which are based in space, which has a bit of scientific jargon BUT it also has many funny & quirky moments. It will make you laugh in a minute & then pull you at the edge of your seat with its twists & turns. The Martian is definitely one good movie you must watch it in the theatre.
The Martian is based on a novel by Andy Weir. Interestingly, the novel is also written with funny quips. The novel has been adapted into the film very nicely. Director Ridley Scott couldn’t get much acclaim from his previous films namely Robin Hood, Prometheus & Exodus: Gods & Kings but The Martian is definitely a game changer for him as well. Matt Demon as Mark Watney is simply brilliant. He definitely is the perfect choice to play the funny astronaut. Supporting actors Jessica Chastain, Jeff Daniels, Kate Mara & Sean Bean backs up the acting department really well.
NASA astronaut Mark Watney along with five of his other crewmates is on a mission to mars. In an unlooked-for turn of event there, Mark is sorely injured leading the crew to believe he’s dead, who eventually are forced to evacuate identifying no possible access to him. Only they don’t know that Mark is still alive. Calculating and analyzing all his possibilities of surviving, Mark knows that it would take 4 years of a manned mission for his rescue for which he obviously wouldn’t last. Therefore, he begins his own theory of batting against the odds and changing the dynamics of science to prove the unimaginable can happen.
You do travel a couple of years back tracing the flashes of Alfonso Cuaron’s Gravity with Sandra Bullock’s space survival story, but The Martian chooses a different mode to convey a relatively similar plot. This time of course, it’s a sneak peak in the world of Mars. Survival stories have a grip to maintain, no two thoughts about it, but the effort that goes in to use it to make the audiences feel the same is immense. Be it a Life of Pie or the similarly time zoned Gravity, The Martian being so much alike is yet so different.
You have to respect the grueling performance that Matt Damon has pulled through superbly. The faith and confidence that he as a character generates is supremely reassuring for the audiences. You sense your persistence dwindling seeing him struggle through to survive and make it, only he through his effortless genius restores it further. Jessica Chastain, Jeff Daniels, Sean Bean and Chiwetel Ejiofor are impressive in the supporting cast. While Ridley as a director has a knack in squeezing out the juice of the narrative, the filmmaker here has worked out of his realm
Mark Watney (Matt Damon) on board The Hermes, gets left out on Mars after a storm that forces the rest of the crew to believe he is dead and leave the surface. He manages to survive more than 500 days on Mars, making the most of whatever is left along with him during their experimentations. He has food for about 300 days, like he calculates. He has an atmosphere-proof place to survive. He solves one problem after another which includes charging batteries of his rover using equipment left out on previous missions, figure a way to traverse 3200 km to reach the landing spot of another Mars mission slotted for four years later, figure out a way to reach NASA and finally grow his own food, which he manages to do by creating an atmosphere-free space inside his own pod by bringing in the soil and cultivating potatoes. Amidst plenty of astrophysics and some emotional calls which include "putting five crew members in a little risk" over "leaving one stranded member to die", PR problems and a failed attempt to send rations to Mars, the movie picks up great pace in the second half.
Ridley Scott worked together with NASA to give the movie the authentic feel it had. Mark Watney (Matt Damon), presumed dead and left behind by his crew, uses his knowledge of botany and his survival skills to become “the greatest botanist on Mars” (pun intended). Mark becomes the first man to grow a potato farm on Mars, the first man to “science the shit” out of a rover, battery situation, the first to create water on Mars, that’s right I said CREATE!
There are many things to like about the movie including Matt Damon's dry wit and Vincent Kapoor's (Chiwetel Ejiofor) emotionally charged attempts. There are Sean Bean and Jeff Daniels as well who spend most of the time looking a little helpless, as not a lot of good lines have been given to them. Jessica Chastain as Commander Lewis, the captain of Hermes, has a meaty role as someone who has some tough decisions to make including swimming in space to try and catch Mark Watney as he thrust himself into outer space as a last resort. The cinematography by Dariusz Wolski (Pirates of Caribbean) is stunning. Probably shot across vast deserts covered in red soil, the landscapes on Mars were well shot. The movie is definitely one-up over Gravity as it had a lot many more elements and diverse landscapes to cover. The end is thrilling and emotionally charged where you almost have to hold your breath hoping no one dies as NASA missions go cowboy-mode to save one of their own - something not expected in real life. As usual a young Astrodynamics' scientist saves the day, making you wonder at Hollywood-ian stereotypes. The OST is the pain, like Mark keeps complaining, disco music left behind by Commander Lewis. It is unfair to put the audience through it for the sake of a joke. It is atrocious and robs you of genuine cinematic pleasures a lot of times.
Seeing as how the movie had everything, along with its flaws (it wasn’t Interstellar), I feel that Ridley Scott did a superb job. Though the runtime for the film was some 2 hours and 20 minutes, Scott managed to cover all the bases quite efficiently, making The Martian a must watch from my perspective.
Storm strikes a manned mission to Mars, and the crew of 6 decides to escape quickly. In the midst, of the chaos, one astronaut- Mark Watney (Matt Damon) is left out on Mars with little news of his existence. Mark who is expected to be dead plays it cool and instead of giving up and thinking that he’d die, starts prepping up for his own survival. The story unfolds with the ‘never-say-die’ attitude of Mark Watney that finds it’s way into bigger discoveries, experiments, some failures and an exemplary showcase of the human survival instinct.
Based on the book of the same name, Ridley Scott beautifully unravels a tale of love, hope and survival. What’s lovely about the film is the simplicity with which the complexities of science are explained with more focus on human life and emotion than terms that can deviate your attention. Simple ideas like growing Potatoes, making oxygen, listening to disco music and fighting for your beliefs. The Martian is more human than anybody.
